Russia has upgraded its Geran suicide drones with a brand new multipurpose warhead, Ukrainian media reported on May 20.
The Geran-1 and 2 drones, produced in Russia, are alleged to be copies of the Iranian-made Shahed-131 and 136 pusher-propelled suicide drones.
The Shahed-131 has a range of 900 kilometers with a warhead weighing 15 kilograms, while the Shahed-136 has a range of 2,500 kilometers with a warhead weighing 50 kilograms. Both drones are guided by a satellite-aided inertial navigation system.
The new warhead, reportedly weighing 90 kg, was likely installed on the Geran-2 version, or a newer reported turbojet-powered version known as the Geran-3 which also has a range of 2,500 kilometers. This version is said to be a copy of the Iranian-made Shahed-238.
The new warhead features high-explosives and hundreds of metal fragments, which makes it lethal against buildings, equipment and personnel. At the same time, it is said to have penetrative properties, making it also useful against fortified targets.
In addition, the warhead reportedly includes an incendiary element which gives it an advantage against targets like ammunition and fuel depots.

Since entering service with the Russian military during the special operation in Ukraine, Geran drone has proven to be a real game changer. The use of these drones expanded significantly over the past year, with reports suggesting that they were constantly being upgraded and refined.
In addition to the known suicide versions, Russia has reportedly developed a long-range loitering munition based on the Geran-2 equipped with an electro-optical targeting system and a two-way datalink. This version can detect and lock on targets, including moving ones, after launch. It is unclear yet if this version has entered active service with the Russian military yet.
