The Indian military activated its Russian-made S-400 long-range air defense systems late on May 7 to repel a Pakistani aerial attack, Indian media reported, citing defense officials.
The officials said that Pakistan attempted to strike multiple military targets across northern and western India using drones and missiles.
The targets included bases in the cities Awantipora, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Bhuj, according to the officials, who added that the projectiles were all intercepted and neutralised by S-400 systems, locally dubbed “Sudarshan Chakra.”
The use of the S-400 was also confirmed by photos posted to social networks. The photos showed the remains of what appears to be 9M96E2 anti-aircraft missiles in Indian territories.
The S-400 is the main pillar of India’s vast air defense network. The country purchased four squadrons of the system from Russia. Each squadron is composed of two batteries. Each battery, or firing unit, is equipped with six launchers, a radar and a control center with 128 missiles. A squadron has a total of 16 vehicles.
Under a $5.43 billion deal signed in 2018, India bought a total of 60 launchers with around 6,000 missiles including 9M96E2 with a range of 120 kilometers, 48N6E2 with a range of 200 kilometers, 48N6E3 with a range of 240 kilometers and 40N6E which can engage targets as far as 380 kilometers.
Indian defense officials told the media that the military responded to the Pakistani aerial attack by targeting air defense radars and systems near the city of Lahore. The officials stressed that the response was “in the same domain and with the same intensity” as the Pakistani attack.
The Pakistani military announced earlier that its air defenses intercepted 25 Israeli-made Harop loitering munitions launched by India over several parts of the country overnight. Four Pakistani troops were wounded in Lahore, reportedly at an air base. In addition, a civilian was killed in the city of Ghotki.
The April 22 terrorist attack on the resort town of Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir sparked a serious crisis between the two nuclear powers with New Delhi claiming that the attackers had links to militant groups operating from Pakistan.
Indian retaliatory strikes against Pakistan killed 31 civilians, including women and children on May 7, according to Pakistani officials. Indian authorities said on the same day that Pakistani shelling killed at least 15 Indian civilians on the same day.

did they work?
russian & chinese missile technology is so many years ahead of that of the usa simply because the, treasonous, psionist enslaved, israel-first, aipac puppets in us government & us military decided to become an insurgency fighting force in the middle east to realize the greater israel project. all those forever wars have cost trillions not only in the deployment of us forces but also the large amounts of such things as humvees, mraps, & other low tech crap
as the russians are fond of saying “but there is a nuance”. russian weaponry is designed to work; american weaponry is designed to be expensive. the profit in america comes from the research and development money that pours in from the pentagon; whether or not it actually works is never part of the equation.
