A fire broke out on May 3 at the Montazer Ghaem power plant in the city of Karaj, the capital of the northern Iranian province of Alborz.
Hossein Ashouri, head of the Fardis fire department, said that the fire began in a portable cabin next to a waste platform near the power plant. Strong winds caused the flames to spread over approximately 2,000 square meters. Nine fire trucks were deployed, and the fire was brought under control. No casualties were reported.
Iranian state media denied that the fire affected operations at the plant. However, Iran International, a Persian-speaking news channel based in London, said that locals in Alborz heard an explosion around the same time the first broke out, then later experienced an earthquake.
The country’s Seismological Center confirmed that the 4.0-magnitude quake struck at a depth of eight kilometers near Mahdasht, on the border of Alborz and Tehran provinces.
Separately, a fire was reported at a cardboard manufacturing factory in the city of Nazarabad, also located in Alborz. There were no casualties and the cause of the fire is still unclear.
The fires in Alborz were the latest in a series of incidents which were reported in industrial and infrastructure facilities in different parts of Iran over the last ten days.
On April 26, a massive fire coupled with several explosions rocked the Shahid Rajaei port in the southern province of Hormozgan, killing 70 people and wounding more than 1,200 others. The next day, the head of the Islamic Republic’s Infrastructure Communications Company said that the country foiled a massive cyber attack on its infrastructure, without elaborating.
Again on April 29, a large blast hit the production hall of a company allegedly affiliated with Iran’s top security body and drone industries in the central city of Isfahan.
The incidents sparked speculations of Israeli sabotage, especially that they began amid indirect nuclear talks between Iran and the United States. However, Iranian authorities are yet to confirm this.
