At least 29 people were killed or wounded late on April 6 when a suspected United States strike hit the outskirts of the Yemen capital, Sanaa, which is held by the Houthis (Ansar Allah).
The strikes targeted a residential building located in the Shu’aub District, the Al-Masirah TV reported, saying that two out of four killed in the “American aggression” were women. The Houthi-run news channel also aired footage showing the aftermath of the attack.
Later, the health ministry of the Sanaa-based, Houthi-led government said that 25 were also wounded by the strike, including 11 women and a child.
Another wave of U.S. strikes hit the Bani Matar District in the region of Sanaa before midnight, according to Al-Masirah. However, no casualties were reported.
The latest deaths have brought the number of people killed since the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) resumed strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen on March 15 on orders from President Donald Trump to 73. The toll reportedly includes both civilians and commanders of the Houthis.
Trump ordered the large-scale operation in response to the Houthis’ renewed attacks on Israel-affiliated shipping in the Red Sea.
CENTCOM has not yet commented on the reports of civilian casualties in the latest strikes on Sanaa. The command has shared very little details about the ongoing operation against the Houthis, so far.
A day earlier, CENTCOM released two videos showing heavily-armed F/A-18 fighter jets taking off the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman in the Red Sea to attack Houthi targets in Yemen. The Houthis have been targeting the aircraft carrier and its strike group on a near daily basis since mid-March.
Despite the lack of clear results, the ongoing operation in Yemen has reportedly cost the U.S. so far around $1 billion. Still, Trump will not likely halt the operation.
In fact, Washington could escalate the operation even further as the Houthis continue to target the U.S. Navy warships and launch missiles at Israel. One way to do this would be to launch ground raids in Houthi-controlled areas with local forces backed by U.S. allies like Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Such a move would reignite the war in Yemen.
