A deeply upgraded version of the Pantsir short-range air defense system based on a tracked chassis has entered service with the Russian military.

A photo showing one of the recently-delivered Pantsir-SM-SV systems was posted to social networks on March 24. Some Russian sources said that the photo was taken in the special military operation zone. However, it is possible that the system was deployed behind the zone, to protect key civilian or military infrastructure deeper in Russian territory.

The KBP Instrument Design Bureau, the producer of the Pantsir, began developing the new versions just a few years earlier.

Unlike its wheeled predecessors, the Pantsir-SM-SV is built on a specifically an updated version of the GM-352 manufactured by the Minsk Tractor Plant in Belarus. The tracked chassis offers enhanced mobility over rough terrain, a critical feature for operations in areas lacking developed road networks.

To improve its performance against various aerial threats, the Pantsir-SM-SV was equipped with an advanced Active Electronically Scanned Array surveillance radar.

The new radar can reportedly detect targets with a radar cross-section (RCS) of three meters from a distance of up to 80 kilometers. For smaller targets, such as the GMLRS precision-guided rockets used by the American-made M142 HIMARS system with an RCS of 0.07 square meters, the detection range is between 27 and 30 kilometers.

The Pantsir-SM-SV is capable of engaging three targets simultaneously, three using its radar and another via its electro-optical system which has been also upgraded.

In addition to its dual 2A38M 30 mm guns, the Pantsir-SM-SV can engage targets using at least three types of command-guided missiles.

The first missile is the standard 57E6 missile with a range of nearly 20 kilometers. Another is an upgraded variant, the 57E6M, with a range of 40 kilometers. Additionally, the system can carry the compact TKB-1055, also referred to as the 19Ya6, missile, designed specifically to engage rockets from multiple launch rocket systems and small drones from some seven kilometers.

This mix of munitions allows the Pantsir-SM-SV to counter a wide range of threats, from fighter jets to precision-guided rockets.

Older variants of the Pantsir, the Pantsir-S1 and S2, have already proven their worth during the special military operation. Around a hundred such systems are currently in service with the Russian military. The new Pantsir-SM-SV, which brings major improvements, is expected to perform even better.

quite an ingenious system. several different systems at the same time. this makes it good. the s-400 lacks self-protection. it can be found in the pantsir.
