Israel and the United States are interested in resettling Palestinians from the Gaza Strip in Syria, CBS News reported on March 17, citing “three sources familiar with the effort.”
Israel invaded Gaza following the Hamas-led attack of October 7, 2023, destroying much of the Strip and displacing more than two million Palestinians living there. So far, the war has claimed the lives of over 48,000, with women and children making up the majority of the victims.
The idea of displacing Palestinians from Gaza and taking over the Strip was first floated by U.S. President Donald Trump Earlier this year. While the proposal was welcomed by the Israeli government, It was rejected by Palestinians.
One source told CBS News that the White House reached out to Syria’s interim government through a third party. Another source “from the region” told the channel that Damascus has been approached with the idea, but a senior Syrian official said the country is not aware of any such outreach.
The Syrian government, which is dominated by Islamists, is struggling to gain legitimacy and left sanctions, mainly imposed by the U.S., on the country during the Assad regime era. Nevertheless, accepting displaced Gazans may be very problematic on an ideological level.
Speaking at the Arab Summit in Egypt on March 4, Syrian president Ahmad al-Sharaa categorically rejected any attempts to displace Palestinians from Gaza.
Sharaa said that there were “new attempts to impose solutions that seek to redraw the maps of the region at the expense of Palestinian blood,” noting that calls to displace Palestinians were a threat to the entire Arab nation and the nucleus of a broader project to uproot Palestinians from their land.
Earlier this month, a report by the Associated Press revealed the U.S. and Israel were discussing the displacement of Gazans to Sudan, Somalia and its breakaway region of Somaliland with the three East African governments. It is still unclear if progress was made with any of these sides.
In response to Trump’s proposal, Egypt hurriedly put forward an alternative plan to rebuild Gaza without displacing Palestinians.
The Arab plan envisions an independent committee of technocrats running Gaza for a six-month period before handing off control of the Strip to the Palestinian Authority. It provides for Palestinians to remain in the Strip while it is being rebuilt. The Trump administration has sent mixed signals about the Egyptian plan.
