Israeli strikes hit an alleged headquarters of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on March 13, with the Israeli Defense Minister making new threats to the country’s Islamists-dominated interim government.

Syrian media said that the strikes wiped out a building in New Cham, a highly-secured upscale district that overlooks Damascus.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based monitoring group, at least one man was killed in the strikes.

In a statement, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that the strike targeted a headquarters where the Islamic Jihad planned and carried out “terror activity.”

“The IDF will not allow terrorist organizations to entrench themselves in Syrian territory and operate against the State of Israel, and will respond forcefully to any such entrenchment,” the military added.

Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened Syria’s interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa, also known by the nom de guerre Abu Mohamad al-Julani, following the strikes.

“Wherever terror activity against Israel is organized, the extreme Islamic leader al-Jolani (al-Sharaa) will find the Air Force aircraft flying above and striking terror targets,” Katz said. “Islamic terrorism will not have immunity in Damascus nor anywhere else.”

The Syrian government didn’t comment on the Israeli strikes. Nevertheless, Muhammad al-Haj Musa, a spokesman for the Islamic Jihad, said that the target was an empty house, not a headquarters of the group as claimed by the IDF.

Following the fall of the Assad regime last December on the hands of Islamists led by Sharaa, the IDF invaded the buffer zone adjacent to the Golan Heights in the southern governorate of al-Qunitra and established nine posts there, including two atop the strategic Mount Hermon. The military also launched hundreds of strikes against the country, destroying much of its combat capabilities.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said last month that southern Syria must be completely demilitarized, warning that Israel would not accept the presence of the forces of Syria’s Islamist government near its territory.

Earlier this week, Israel escalated further against Syria by launching more than 40 strikes against military targets and threatening Sharaa personally.
