On the night of January 21st, Russian and Ukraine again exchanged massive strikes in each other’s rear regions. The both sides suffered damage.
According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, in total, Russian air defense destroyed 55 Ukrainian drones in six Russian rear regions
during the night. They included:
- 22 UAVs in the border Bryansk region;
- 12 UAVs in the Rostov region;
- 10 UAVs in the Smolensk region;
- 6 UAVs in the Voronezh region;
- 4 UAVs in the Saratov region;
- 1 UAV in the border Kursk region.

Most of Ukrainian drones were destroyed in the border Bryansk region but no damage was reported there. At the same time, the rear Smolensk region came under massive attack. In total, 10 UAVs were intercepted. Probably, he target of the attack was the local Smolensk Aviation Plant. No damage to its facilities was confirmed but Ukrainian drones or their wreckage struck two residential buildings located not far from the plant. Fires broke out but according to local reports, there were no victims as a result of the attack.
Another target of Ukrainian strikes was a fuel depot in Liski in the Voronezh region. A fire broke out at the facility. The same depot came under Ukrainian attack on January 15th.
The Ukrainian military intensifies mass drone strikes in the Russian rear regions, mainly targeting fuel and energy facilities and industrial enterprises. Meanwhile, Ukrainian propaganda attempts to create more fake victories of the Ukrainian military. There were unconfirmed reports about the alleged Ukrainian strike on a fuel depot in the town of Yartsevo in the Smolensk region. The reports were accompanied with footage of a fire but no Ukrainian strikes were confirmed in the area. Earlier, the unconfirmed footage of fires in Kazan was also widely spread online by fake social media accounts. Kiev operates a large network of fake channels in Telegram, Vkontakte etc, which are the most popular in Russia.

Ukrainian drones strikes continue in the morning. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that at least 14 Ukrainian UAVs were destroyed before noon. Most of them, 11 UAVs were intercepted over the Black Sea near the Crimean coast. Later, five more drones targeted the border Belgorod region, inflicting no damage.
The attack on the Crimean peninsula was repelled and it resulted in no damage but the drone strikes were likely probing Russian air defense before another large attack with drones and NATO missiles on the Russian southern regions.

There were other signs of the Ukrainian and NATO militaries preparing for large attacks in the region. On January 19th, the U-2 high altitude reconnaissance aircraft of the US Airforce entered the southeastern area of the Black Sea during its patrol and approached the shores of the Russian Krasnodar region, Georgia, Abkhazia. According to Russian monitoring sources, the last time U-2S was spotted circling in this part of the Black Sea on February 22, 2022.
The flight path of the U-2S aircraft followed the Turkish Stream and Blue Stream gas pipelines. Commenting on the recent drone strikes on the Russian Russkaya station, which is part of the Turkish Stream, Moscow warned that Washington was behind the attack and damage of the last pipelines that deliver Russian gas to Europe is extremely beneficial to the US, which supplies LNG at inflated prices.
The flight of the US reconnaissance aircraft was also preceded by Ukrainian pinpoint drone strikes. On January 18th, Ukrainian UAVs were shot down west and north of Crimea.
The clear signs of the upcoming Ukrainian attacks in the Black Sea, which may also target the infrastructure of the pipelines, also include the ongoing drills of Ukrainian naval drones conducted on the Black Sea coast and in Kyiv.
Washington may attempt another attack in the Black Sea conducted by the Ukrainian hands in the nearest future in order to disrupt Russian gas supplies.

In their turn, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation continue precision strikes on military and industrial infrastructure throughout Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian military, in total, 131 Russian drones and 4 Iskander missiles targeted the country. 72 drones were allegedly destroyed. The other UAVs were ” locally missed without any negative consequence”, this is the way Kiev explains another defeat of its air defense forces.
Explosions thundered throughout Ukraine, including in the Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Poltava, Sumy, Kirovohrad, Dnepropetrovsk, Cherkassy, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv, Odessa, Kharkiv, Rivne, Khmelnitsk and Vinnytsia, Zaporizhia regions and in the area of the DPR controlled by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The local authorities confirmed damage in the Poltava and Cherkassy regions.
According to various monitoring sources, Russian strikes reached most of their targets in the border Sumy and in the eastern Dnepropetrovsk regions. They included areas of deployment of the Ukrainian military personnel and equipment, warehouses and fuel depots.
The State Railway Company confirmed damage to the railway station in Sinelnikovo in the Dnepropetrovsk region. According to local reports, Russian missile struck the important transport hub, which played an important role in military logistics of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the Donbass frontlines.
An industrial facility was reportedly struck in the city of Krivy Rih, as well as an oil refinery in Kremenchug. Strikes were recorded in the area of the Mirgorod airfield in the Poltava region, in the Kirovograd and Mykolaiv regions. Russian drones reportedly reached the Kiev region, where they struck targets in Vasylkkov and Yagotin.
