Thousands residents of the Syrian cities of Hama, Homs, Latakia and Tartus have held protests against the new regime established in the country. The people held protests against the recent series of atrocities committed by rebels after seizing power. This included killing of civilians, including representatives of ethnic and religious minorities, the desecration of religious sites and other crimes.
Security forces controlled by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham answred to this with force opening fire on the protesters. Reports say that dozens of people were injured in the shooting.
Despite photo and video facts, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham media blamed former servicemen of the Syrian Arab Army for the escalation. According to this version, former SAA members allegedly opened fire on the demonstrators in order to destabilize the situation in the country.
These accusations were used as a pretext for a larger operation against what HTS media claims to be “gangs of the Bashar al-Assad regime” and “illegal armed groups” allegedly acting on orders from Iran. The Alawite minority was among the first to suffer. Many people were captured, beaten and then went missing.
Meanwhile, in Hama province, fighters of the new regime shot three Alawite judges who were traveling to the city of Masyaf. Earlier, the new Syrian authorities called on them to return to work, promising immunity.
In the same province, two former servicemen of the SAA were also killed. Earlier, the leadership of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham guaranteed them safety if they laid down their arms.
In Latakia province, locals reported about arbitrary detentions of Alawites and former members of security forces. They were captured, beaten and taken in unknown direction.
At the same time, Christians have held protests on the streets of Suqaylabiyah after members of the groups that seized power in the country torched a Christmas tree in the town. The incident has stirred anger among local residents, who view the act as a deliberate attack on their community and religious identity.
Initially, current authorities in Damascus have attributed the arson to foreign jihadist elements operating within the region, and have pledged to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice. Eight people were detained immediately after the incident. They turned out to be natives of Uzbekistan and members of one of the groups that are part of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
The important fact is that media outlets serving the interests of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham tried to argue that former servicemen of the SAA were behind the crime because they want to destabilize the situation in the country.
Current authorities are trying to blame the former servicemen of the SAA for other crimes also. In particular, several murders of Alawites have been reported in Latakia province. A Christian couple was killedin In Homs province, The man’s head was cut off. In Deir Ezzor province, members of the groups controlling the country shot dead a serviceman who had previously collaborated with the Russian Armed Forces.
Media resources loyal to the current Syrian regime does not hide their delight at these developments. Moreover, some of them even criticize Abu Muhammad al-Julani for his allegedly soft approach to Alawites, Kurds and Christians.
Western countries, who were first to praise the fall of Assad-led government as well as ‘moderate approaches’ of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and its leader Abu Muhammad al-Julani, prefer to ignore the crimes and chaos developing in Syria.
