A gunman opened fire close to the Israeli embassy in the Jordanian capital, Amman, early on November 24, before being shot.
Citing the Public Security Force, the official Petra news agency said that police shot and killed a gunman who had fired at a police patrol in the Rabiah neighborhood of Amman. It added that an investigation had been launched into the security incident.
Jordanian police had earlier cordoned off an area near the heavily guarded embassy after gunshots were heard. Police vehicles and ambulances were also seen rushing to Rabiah. Residents in the neighborhood were ordered to stay in their homes.
Later, the Public Security Force announced that three of its personnel sustained wounds in the firefight with the slain gunman.
Rabiah witnessed multiple large protests against Israel after the outbreak of the war on the Gaza Strip, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 44,000 Palestinians.
Israeli ambassador Amir Weissbrod has been in Israel since leaving for security reasons after the start of the war in October of last year.
The war on Gaza caused some tensions between Israel and Jordan, which hosts about two million Palestinian refugees. However, the two sides continue to cooperate on military and security issues. Both countries upped security along their joint border after two separate attacks by Jordanian gunmen on the Israeli side last September and October.
