A series of Israeli strikes hit the city of Palmyra in the eastern countryside of Homs in central Syria on November 20, according to Syrian state TV.
The strikes hit several buildings in the city and its outskirts, including in a nearby industrial zone and close to the ancient ruins. Photos posted to social networks showed large clouds of smoke rising from targeted areas. There were also reports of fires.
The strikes were reportedly launched from the direction of Jordan through the southeastern Syrian area of al-Tan, which is controlled by the United States military.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that four Iran-backed foreign fighters were killed by the Israeli strikes on Palmyra.
While Syrian state TV reported casualties, the monitoring group claims are yet to be verified. The group, which is based in London and run by a single person, has regularly been accused by Syrian war analysts of false reporting and inflating casualty numbers after Israeli strikes as well as inventing them wholesale.

Israel has escalated its attacks on Syria since the outbreak of the war in the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip last October, targeting Syrian military sites as well as personnel of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Lebanon’s Hezbollah and other factions of the so-called Axis of Resistance.
After expanding operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon in September, the Israeli military vowed to stop the supply of any weapons from Iran to Hezbollah through the Lebanese-Syrian border.
