The Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iran-backed armed factions, announced on November 2 that it had struck four “vital targets” in the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat with suicide drones.
The attack was carried out “in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity [Israel] against civilians, including children, women, and the elderly” in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, the group said in a statement, vowing that “operations against enemy strongholds will continue at an increasing pace.”
Several blasts were reported at Eilat ahead of the IRI announcement. Later, the Israeli Defense Forces said that it shot down three drones which were launched “from the east,” a term the military uses to describe attacks from Iraq, over the Red Sea close to the port city.
No warning sirens sounded in Eilat during the attack as the Iraqi drones were reportedly shot down before entering Israeli airspace.
Earlier in the morning, the IRI announced a attack on a “vital target” in northern Israel and released video footage showing the launch of what appears to be an Iranian-made Shahed-101 suicide drone. It is still unclear if the attack was foiled by the IDF.
The IRI began carrying out attacks against Israel as well as against United States forces in Iraq and neighboring Syria last October in response to the Israeli all-out war on Gaza. The group escalated its attacks against Israel in September in response to Israel’s ongoing aerial campaign and ground operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Israel has not responded directly to the IRI’s attacks yet. However, a regional security official told The Associated Press on November 1 that the recent uptake in drone attack could soon push Israel to launch a retaliatory attack against Iraq.
