Five Syrian troops were killed and others were wounded early on September 27 when a series of Israeli strikes hit the countryside of the governorate of Rif Dimashq, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.
Citing an unnamed military official, the state-run news agency said that the strikes were launched from the direction of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and targeted a military site close to the town of Kfeir Yabous, which is located less than two kilometers away from the border with Lebanon.
The deadly strikes on Syria came amid a major Israeli escalation against Hezbollah in Lebanon which began earlier this week.
Just a day earlier, Israeli strikes hit a bridge and a crossing in the town of Matraba, which is located right on the border between the Syrian governorate of Homs and the Lebanese governorate of Baalbek-Hermel. At least eight people, including Syrian customs officers, were reportedly wounded.
The strikes hit infrastructure that was used by Hezbollah to smuggle weapons, the Israeli military said in a statement after the strikes, adding that weapons smuggled into Lebanon from Syria are being used against Israel.
Israel intensified its strikes on Syria following the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip last October. Now, it is apparently planning to step up its operations against the country even further as a part of its ongoing escalation against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
War-torn Syria has for long refrained from responding directly to Israel strikes in order to avoid a dangerous confrontation. With the strikes becoming more and more deadly, this policy could change.
