The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged on August 17 that two of its reservists were killed by an explosive device in the central part of the Gaza Strip.
The slain reservists were identified by the IDF as Major Yotam Itzhak Peled, a logistics officer, and Sergeant Major Mordechai Yosef Ben Shoam, a truck driver. Both served with the Jerusalem Brigade’s 8119th Battalion.
The deadly attack took place as Peled was commanding a convoy to supply Israeli troops in Gaza City’s southern Zeitoun neighborhood with equipment, and Ben Shoam was one of the drivers. During the drive along the occupied Netzarim Corridor in central Gaza, an explosive device was detonated, killing the two reservists and wounding others.
The al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Gaza-ruling Hamas Movement, claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.
The fighters who planted the explosive device also opened fire at the convoy before fleeing, according to an initial IDF probe and a statement from the group.
The death of the two reservists brought Israel’s toll in the ground operations against Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions in Gaza and along its border to 334. Around 2,200 others have been reportedly wounded. In addition, over 500 vehicles were hit in the Strip, according to Hebrew media.
On the Palestinian side, the death toll from the Israeli war has exceeded 40,000, with women and children making up most of the casualties.
Despite killing tens of thousands and destroying much of Gaza in just ten months, the IDF is yet to achieve any of its main objectives. Hamas remains in control of the Strip, around a hundred Israeli hostages are still being held there and Palestinian fighters are gaining more combat experience.
