Hezbollah carried out on August 17 a series of attacks against Israel, shelling a settlement for the first time and hitting six military sites in support of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip as well as in response to a recent deadly Israeli strike on southern Lebanon.
Ten civilians were killed, including a woman and two children, and five others were wounded in the strike which hit the town of Nabatieh a day earlier. All the casualties were Syrian nationals. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that the strike targeted a weapons depot of Hezbollah.
In response to the strike, Hezbollah said that it fired a large barrage of rockets at the Israeli settlement of Ayelet HaShahar for the first time since the start of the ongoing confrontation.
The IDF said that at least 55 rockets were fired from Lebanon at the settlement with some intercepted by Iron Dome air defense systems. There were no reports of injuries, but the rockets sparked blazes in at least 10 locations in the Upper Galilee.
In another attack, Hezbollah said that it struck a gathering of Israeli troops near the site of al-Marj with two suicide drones. Hebrew media said that two soldiers were wounded. One of the soldiers was listed in serious condition, while the other was slightly hurt.
The other attacks carried out by Hezbollah during the day saw the group targeting a surveillance system of the IDF in the site of Jal al-Alam with a suicide drone and shelling the sites of al-Samaqa, Ruwaysat al-Alam, Hadab Yaroun and Hursh Shtula with rockets and artillery shells. No losses were reported.
The IDF carried out several strikes against targets in southern Lebanon in response to these attacks. One of the strikes hit a motorcycle in the Qadmous area east of the city of Tyre. The IDF said that the strike killed a commander in Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force. The group mourned one of its fighters later without confirming that he was a commander.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border broke out after the start of the war on Gaza last October, with Hezbollah and its allies launching near-daily attacks against the IDF in support of the Strip.
So far, the confrontation has resulted in 26 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Golan as well as the deaths of at least 18 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, more than 600 people have been killed, including 393 fighters of Hezbollah and over 100 civilians.
