Tribal forces said to be backed by the Syrian government launched on August 7 a surprise attack against the United States-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the eastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor.
The Hawar News Agency, which is linked to the SDF, said that tribal fighters crossed the the Euphrates River coming from the towns of Asharah, al-Bukamal and al-Mayadin on the government-held western bank and at the same time advanced from a pocket held by government forces on the eastern bank. Multiple cells within SDF-held areas also took part in the attack.
The surprise attack was orchestrated by the General Intelligence Directorate, Syria’s main secret service agency, and carried out with fire support from the Syrian Arab Army, according to Hawar.
Al-Watan newspaper, which is close to the Syrian government, reported that the tribal forces captured several towns from the SDF in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside, including Abu Hamam, Granij and al-Tayyana. It also said that the forces advanced in the northern countryside of the governorate, capturing the key town of Busayrah.
Videos posted to social networks showed tribal fighters moving in several towns in the eastern and northern countryside of Deir Ezzor.
A source from the tribal forces told Al-Watan that at least ten SDF fighters were captured alive. The unnamed source added that American-made weapons were also seized from the group.
The SDF responded by shelling the liberated towns with mortars, according to the newspaper, which reported civilian casualties.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a London-based pro-opposition group, at least three civilians have been killed so far.
The U.S.-led coalition brought in reinforcements to its bases in Deir Ezzor and intensified flights over the eastern and northern countryside of the governorate. There were reports of U.S. strikes in support of the SDF by the SOHR and pro-opposition media, but these claims were rejected by government media and activists from the governorate.
In an apparent response to the surprise attack in Deir Ezzor, the SDF closed all entrances to government-held areas in the city center of the northeastern governorate of al-Hasakah. The government has not reacted to the move yet.
Last year, the SDF cracked down on the leaders of its so-called Deir Ezzor Military Council and tribal leaders in the governorate under claims of treason and corruption sparking protests by Arab tribes. The unhinged use of force by the Kurdish-led group turned the protests to a full-on armed uprising.
The leaders of the tribal uprising moved to government-held areas. Still, the U.S.-led coalition didn’t intervene in support of the SDF.
The surprise attack on U.S. proxies in Deir Ezzor comes amid soaring tensions in the Middle East, as Iran and its allies threaten retaliation for the recent Israeli assassination of Hamas leader in Tehran and a senior commander of Lebanon’s Hezbollah in Beirut.
Last April, U.S. forces based in the governorate and other parts of Syria helped repel a large-scale Iranian missile and drone attack on Israel.
