The Russian military’s Sever Group of Forces, which is mainly active in the Kharkiv direction, has begun to use a new radar system dubbed “Irbis” which has a range of up to 150 kilometers, the Minister of Defense revealed on July 7.

“This is a new unique station. From experience, I can say that the station is better than previous radar stations, because it is more maneuverable, the time to occupy and leave positions is much faster. Well, the reconnaissance range is much further. It detects all types of enemy fire units, mortar, cannon and rocket artillery. The station can also detect air targets. We conduct reconnaissance, detect the target and immediately transfer it to the control points of the firing units,” said the commander of the Irbis radar with the callsign Sector in a video released by the ministry.

The new radar helped foil several attack attempts by Kiev forces, according to the ministry, which said that the system quickly transmitted any detection data to air defenses.

“We are also adjusting the fire of our artillery. Thus, counter-battery combat is more effective,” Sector said.

According to another operator of the Irbis radar with the call sign Fiksik, the station also detects FPV drones, information about which is displayed on the screen.

“If it works, we immediately turn on all electronic warfare systems and suppress the UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] signal on approach,” he said. “Also, just in case, instead of the usual cabin, a so-called armored capsule is installed, protecting against shrapnel.”

The new radar shares the same name with the Irbis-E multi-mode, hybrid passive electronically scanned array radar system that was developed by Tikhomirov NIIP for the Su-35 fighter jet. However, it is not clear yet if the two systems are related in any way.

Last May, the Sever Group of Forces led a ground offensive in Kharkiv following a series of deadly Ukrainian raids and strikes on the Russian region of Belgorod.

The long range and multi-functionality of the Irbis radar will help the group achieve its tasks and further improve the protection of the Russian border.
