The Russian military struck on July 3 infrastructure facilities in the Ukrainian region of Poltava which were used to deliver fuel to Kiev forces.
Video footage of the attack, which was reportedly carried out using Kh-59 air-launched cruise missiles, was posted to social networks the very next day. The pinpoint strike destroyed what appears to be a pumping station and set several fuel tanks on fire.
At the time of the attack, Ukraine’s Air Command Skhid [East] alleged that a Russian cruise missile was intercepted by its air defenses.
However, the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy admitted later that unspecified infrastructure and a facility belonging to a gas production company were damaged in the attack.
The Kh-59 cruise missile, which is manufactured by Russia’s Tactical Missiles Corporation, is guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system with an electro-optical or an active radar guidance for the terminal phase depending on the version.
The latest versions of the missile have a range of more than 290 kilometers. The missile is available with a wide range of warheads and can be launched by most fighter jets in service today with the Russian Aerospace Forces.
The Russian military stepped up strikes on high value Ukrainian targets earlier this year, especially infrastructure facilities directly benefiting Kiev forces or the country’s military industrial complex. Recent Russian strikes inflicted heavy damage and hindered Ukrainian military operations.
