Yemen’s Houthis (Ansar Allah) said on June 25 that they used a new anti-ship ballistic missile to hit the MSC Sarah V vessel in the Arabian Sea, claiming responsibility for the attack that was reported a day earlier.

Brigade General Yahya Sarea, the group’s military spokesperson, claimed a “accurate and direct” hit on the ship, describing the vessel as “Israeli.”

The attack was carried out with “a new ballistic missile” deployed after successful tests, the spokesman said in a statement, adding that the missile showcased its ability to hit targets accurately and over long distances.

He also stressed that the Houthsi will “continue to develop their military capabilities … to support the Palestinian resistance militarily and to defend Yemen in the face of the American-British aggression.”

The Houthi operations will not stop until the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip is stopped and the siege on the Palestinian people in the enclave is lifted, the spokesman concluded.

The Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Joint Maritime Information Center said on June 24 that the Liberian-flagged vessel was targeted by a missile in the Arabian Sea, but was not hit. It noted that the vessel was likely attacked due to perceived Israeli association.

From its side, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a detachment of the Royal Navy, said one the same day that the vessel was attacked while sailing 246 nautical miles off Yemen’s southeastern coastal town of Nishtun .According to the agency statement, the captain reported an explosion in the vicinity of the vessel.

“The crew is reported safe and the vessel is proceeding to its next port of call,” UKMTO said in an advisory notice.

Since last November, the Houthis have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the United States and the UK in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in response to the Israeli war and siege on Gaza.

The group also launched dozens of drones and missiles at the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat and shot down six American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.

The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January in an attempt to deter the group and degrade its offensive capabilities. However, these efforts failed as evident by the group’s recent attacks.
