Hezbollah released video footage on June 18 from one of its reconnaissance drones flying over the northern Israeli city of Haifa, in what appeared to be a direct threat to the country.
The ten-minute video, dubbed “What The Hoopoe Brought Back,” included shots of strategic military sites in the outskirts of Haifa, including the Iron Dome and David’s Sling air defense systems, as well as footage of a residential neighborhoods in the nearby area of Kiryat Yam
Shots of the Israeli Navy base, as well as several warships and infrastructure said to belong to the Navy’s submarine unit, Shayetet 7, were also included in the footage.
Hezbollah claimed that the drone returned to Lebanon unimpeded, without revealing when the reconnaissance mission was conducted. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has not yet commented on the video.
The Iran-backed group and its allies began launching near-daily attacks from Lebanon against the IDF in support of the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions in the Gaza Strip after the outbreak of the Israeli war on the enclave last October.
The United States and France have been making efforts to prevent the risk of an all-out war from erupting between Hezbollah and the IDF.
Hezbollah released the reconnaissance drone footage as U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein was in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, after visiting Israel a day earlier, to meet with Lebanese officials including parliament speaker Nabih Berri, an ally of the group.
Shortly after the release of the video, the head of the IDF’s Northern Command Major General Ori Gordin and head of the Operations Directorate Major General Oded Basiuk approved Lebanon battle plans.
In a statement, the IDF said the generals held an assessment, during which “operational plans for an offensive in Lebanon were approved.”
The top commanders also made decisions regarding “accelerating the readiness of the forces on the ground,” the military added.
So far, the clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border have resulted in ten civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of at least 15 IDF soldiers and reservists. On the Lebanese side, more than 500 people have been killed, including 326 fighters of Hezbollah and at least 90 civilians.
An all-out war between Hezbollah and the IDF could cause hundreds, if not thousands more casualties. Israel will not likely rush into the war as it knows the group possesses a large arsenal of advanced offensive weapons, including precision-guided ballistic missiles and suicide drones.

israel leadership has lots its mind if they invade lebanon. the death and destruction that will rain down on israel from hezbollah is something it is better we don’t find out. no where in israel is safe. of course we can’t forget the death and destruction the idf would visit upon lebanon. nobody is a winner in war.
