A United States-made ADM-160 MALD missile decoy killed a child in the coastal town of Baniyas during the May 29 Israeli strike on Syria, deputy chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria -a division of the Russian Defense Ministry- revealed during a briefing on May 30.
“From 9:24 p.m. to 9:27 p.m. local time [6:24 p.m. to 6:27 p.m. GMT] on May 29 and from 12:48 a.m. to 12:53 a.m. on May 30 [9:48 p.m. to 9:53 p.m., May 29, GMT], two pairs of Israel’s F-16 fighter jets delivered air strikes on military infrastructure facilities in the Homs governorate … with the use of ADM-160 MALD decoy missiles,” Major General Yury Popov said. “One decoy missile fell in the town of Baniyas … killing one child, injuring ten civilians and damaging a residential building.”
Syrian media reported on June 1 that one of the civilians wounded in the strike, an elderly man from Baniyas, had died. His death brought the toll from the strike to two.
The MALD is an air-launched, expendable decoy missile that was developed by the U.S. for use in suppression of enemy air defenses operations.
The decoy carries a Signature Augmentation Subsystem (SAS) which is composed of various active radar enhancers which cover a range of frequencies. The SAS can in theory simulate any aircraft, from heavy bombers to fighter jets.
Despite the use of MALD decoy by the Israeli Air Force during the strike, Syrian air defenses were able to intercept several munitions, including at least one Israeli-made Spice 1000 precision-guided glide bomb, over the country’s southern region and eastern region of neighboring Lebanon.
It’s worth noting that Israel has significantly escalated its strikes on Syria since the outbreak of the war in the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip, targeting Syrian military sites as well as personnel of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Lebanese Hezbollah and other forces of the so-called Axis of Resistance.
Recent Israeli strikes on Syria killed 14 civilians, including a child and two women, and wounded at least 32 others, according to the London-based pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
