The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on May 3 that its forces engaged and destroyed three drones in Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen a day earlier.
“It was determined these systems presented an imminent threat to U.S., coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region,” the command said in a statement. “These actions are taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels.”
CENTCOM’s statement didn’t specify where the drones were destroyed. However, Yemen’s Al-Masirah TV, which is run by the Houthis, reported “American-British” strikes on the airport of the western province of al-Hodeidah on May 2. The news channel didn’t provide any further details.
Also on May 2, Houthi leader revealed that his group has launched a total of 156 attacks against Israeli-affiliated ships as well as at the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat since the start of the Israeli war on the Palestinian Gaza Strip.
“The attacks against ships in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and the Indian Ocean were carried out with 606 ballistic and winged missiles and drones,” Abdulmalik al-Houthi said in a televised speech aired by al-Masirah TV, adding a total of 111 attacks have been carried out against Israeli targets in Eilat.
In addition to the attacks detailed by al-Houthi, the group has shot down three combat drones of the U.S. military over Yemen since the start of the current confrontation.
With regard to the economic toll on Israel from the Houthis’ repeated attacks on the international shipping lines, the leader said that the “prices of food and medicine in Israel have been increasing due to our attacks on the ships.”
“We are preparing for a fourth round of military escalation if Israel and the U.S. continue to be stubborn,” al-Houthi warned.
According to al-Houthi, the U.S.-led coalition has launched 452 strikes on Houthi targets since January, killing 40 people and wounding 35 others.
Despite taking some losses, the capabilities of the Houthis were not degraded. The group will likely continue to launch attacks until Israel ends its war on Gaza.
