The military wing of the Hamas Movement announced on November 22 that one of its commanders was assassinated in southern Lebanon by Israel a day earlier.
In a statement, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades said that the commander, Khalil Hamid al-Kharraz from the Rashidieh camp, was killed by the “treacherous hand of Zionism near occupied Palestine.”
“Commander Khalil (Abu Khaled) supported the resistance at home and abroad, and he made his jihadi mark in the field. Our martyr was brave and courageous. He dedicated himself to the cause of God, and was present in all fields of jihad over several decades,” the statement reads.
Khalil’s vehicle was targeted by an Israeli combat drone near the village of Chaaitiyeh in southern Lebanon. Three other members of Hamas were reportedly killed with the commander.
Before the assassination, Farah Omar and Rabih al-Maamari, who worked for the Al-Mayadeen TV, were killed by an Israeli drone strike while reporting in an open area at the crossroads between the towns of Tayr Harfa and Jibbein. Their guide, Hussein Aqeel, was also killed in the strike.
The assassination of Hamas commander and killing of Al-Mayadeen journalist marked a serious escalation by Israel, who has so far failed to reestablish deterrence against Hezbollah. The armed groups and its allies, including Hamas, resumed attacks against Israel from southern Lebanon after the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip.
On November 21, Hezbollah fighters carried out at least 12 attacks, targeting an Israeli main battle tank, five gatherings of troops, five military sites and a factory of defense giant Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.
The situation on the Lebanese front is expected to calm down for the next few days as a result of the Israeli-Hamas temporary ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
So far, the clashes on the Lebanese front have claimed the lives of six IDF troops, three Israeli civilians, 76 fighters of Hezbollah, two fighters from the Lebanese Resistance Brigades, one fighter from the Lebanese Resistance Regiments, seven members of the Hamas Movement, four fighters from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and 12 Lebanese civilians.
