Late on November 11, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged that five of its soldiers were killed while taking part in ground operations in the Gaza Strip.
Four of the soldiers, all of whom were serving in the 697th Battalion of the 551st Paratroopers Brigade were, were killed by a blast from a booby-trapped tunnel shaft next to a mosque in the city of Beit Hanoun in northeastern Gaza. The troops were not inside the tunnel, according to the IDF.
The fifth slain soldier was serving in the logistics unit of the 84th “Givati” Brigade. The IDF didn’t clarify how the soldier was killed.
The last casualties brought the toll of slain soldiers in the IDF’s ground operation in Gaza to 42. More than 260 others are said to have been wounded.
The IDF have been advancing deep in Gaza City and nearby areas for the last few days. However, its losses were not limited to troops.
In his latest audio message, Abu Obaida, the spokesman for the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas Movement, announced that 25 vehicles of the IDF were destroyed or damaged during clashes in northern Gaza between November 10 and 11. According to the spokesman, at least 160 vehicles have been destroyed since the start of Israel’s ground operations in the Strip.
The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades also released video footage showing its fighters attacking several Israeli Merkava Mark 3 and 4 main battle tanks with rocket-propelled grenades in Beit Hanoun and the area of al-Tawam.
Despite recent losses, the IDF appears to be determined to go on with its ground operation in Gaza. IDF Spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari claimed during a press briefing on November 11 that Hamas is losing control of the northern part of the Strip.
It could take the IDF several more weeks to completely take control over Gaza City. This will also cost Israel heavy human and material losses.
