At least 9,257 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip since the war broke out on October 7, the Hamas-run health ministry announced on November 3.
The ministry said in an update that 3,826 children and 2,405 women were among the dead. It also noted that the number of wounded has exceeded 23,516.
Separately, Ashraf al-Qudra, a spokesman for the ministry, revealed during a press conference that 1,200 children are still buried under the debris. The spokesman also said that 136 paramedics were killed, 25 ambulance vehicles were destroyed. 126 hospitals and another 50 medical centers were also targeted, according to him.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stepped up strikes on Gaza after its troops managed to besiege the northern part of the Strip, including Gaza City, a day earlier. Roads leading south were reportedly cut, and civilians attempting to flee were targeted.
In one case eight children were killed along with their parents in an Israeli strike while moving towards the south along a beach road.
Israeli advance slowed down on November 3, as troops are apparently working to clear and secure newly-captured areas in northern Gaza.
The IDF said that the Yahalom combat engineering unit has been working to demolish Hamas tunnels discovered during ground operations.
Yahalom troops, members of the Combat Engineering Corps’s 7107th Battalion, along with infantry forces of the Nahal and Negev brigades, as well as tanks, uncovered several tunnel entrances in northern Gaza, according to the IDF.
“The troops uncovered shafts, planted explosives… and neutralized the tunnels,” the IDF said.
The IDF released two videos showing engineering troops discovering a tunnel and blowing up another in an unspecified part of northern Gaza.
The IDF also acknowledged losing another soldier, which raises the number of Israeli troops killed in the Gaza ground operation to 24.
More Israeli losses will likely be reported before the end of the day. Since the morning, Hamas’ military wing, Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, has announced that its fighters had targeted a tank, an armored personnel carrier, an armored bulldozer and four other military vehicles. Four groups of troops were also targeted and a soldier was hit by sniper fire. A gathering of the IDF near Gaza was also shelled.
Al-Qassam also released video footage of its fighters engaging Israeli tanks and infantry in the city of Beit Hanon in northern Gaza with rocket-propelled grenades.
In coming days, the IDF will work to link its advancing troops along the beach with the units that encircled Gaza city from the south. It is still unclear if Israel is planning to storm the highly-dense city. Such a move will likely be costly. It would also endanger thousands of civilians still trapped there.
