According to the Front of Defense for Egyptian Protesters (FDEP), foreign nationals, activists and journalists were among the 237 detained activists in the capital, Cairo, and the city of Giza.

Earlier almost 100 others were detained in pre-dawn house raids and roundups at cafes in downtown Cairo.

The protests erupted and called over two weeks after President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi announced that the Red Sea islands of Tiran and Sanafir are in the territorial waters of Saudi Arabia. The decision was based on a maritime border agreement signed with Riyadh.

Monday’s demonstrations turned violent after demonstrants attacked the police. In turn, police servicemen used tear gas and birdshot against demonstrators.
