Paratroops from Syria’s elite 25th Special Mission Forces Division performed over 1,500 parachute jumps over various terrains in desert areas in Aleppo, mountainous areas in Latakia and over the Mediterranean Sea within training exercises conducted using Russian military aircraft, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on October 5.

The 25th Special Mission Forces Division, which is commanded by renowned officer Suheil al-Hassan, is the most elite formation of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA). The formation is mainly trained and equipped by Russia. It participated in several joint exercises with the Russian military in the last few years.

“Military personnel of the Russian group of forces in Syria ensured the conduct of a comprehensive exercise of Syrian special forces units,” the ministry said in a statement.

It added: “At this exercise, Syrian military personnel for the first time in the history of Syria practiced a night mass landing from an Il-76 aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces. The landing took place with a free fall on special-purpose parachute systems Arbalet-2 from a height of 5,000 meters using night vision devices.”

The final stage of the joint exercise mimicked the capture of an enemy airfield after parachuting from helicopters, according to the ministry.

“During this stage, more than 100 special forces troops were dropped from Mi-8MTSH helicopters of the Russian Aerospace Forces using Arbalet-2 parachutes in combat gear from a height of 4,000 meters and gliding to a distance of more than eight kilometers. Firing points of the mock enemy were hit by small arms fire and grenade launchers from the air while descending by parachute,” the ministry said.

Simultaneously, a special forces group landed over the Mediterranean Sea and carried out the task of occupying and blockading a section of the coast to prevent the mock enemy from leaving the airfield and further destroying it.

The ministry said that the mock attack on the airfield was supported by Ka-52 attack helicopters of the Russian Armed Forces.

The Russian-Syrian military exercise came amid rising tensions with the United States-led coalition, an escalation by terrorist groups in the northwestern region of Greater Idlib and an increase in Turkish attacks on Kurdish forces in the northern and eastern region.
