The October 2 Israeli strikes on the eastern Syria governorate of Deir Ezzor targeted two radar sites of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), Syrian opposition media reported.

The two radar sites both belong to the SAA’s 3rd Electronic Support Brigade and are located near Harabesh Quarter in the southern outskirts of Deir Ezzor city.

In a statement to the official Syrian Arab News Agency after the strikes, a military official acknowledged “material losses” and said that two service members were wounded.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based pro-opposition monitoring group, said that a bridge in al-Hiri town in the southern Deir Ezzor countryside as well as the gate and the yard of the nearby al-Qaim border crossing with Iraq were also hit by Israeli strikes.

The aim of the Israeli attack was likely to further weaken the SAA early warning and air defense network in eastern Syria. Most of the network was destroyed by rebels in the early years of the war in the country. More Israeli strikes could hit the region in the near future.

Several similar complex Israeli attacks targeted Syria in the past. On September 13 afternoon, a series of Israeli strikes targeted two air defense bases in the western coastal governorate of Tartus, killing two service members and wounding several others. Later on the same day, a second wave of strikes hit a military research center in the west-central governorate of Hama. Only material losses were reported there.

Israel has carried out hundreds of aerial attacks against Syria over the past decade. However, it rarely acknowledges responsibility as the attacks are a part of a covert military campaign, known as “the war between the wars.”

The campaign is meant to prevent Iran from establishing a lasting presence in the country or smuggling advanced weapons to Hezbollah in neighboring Lebanon.
