A series of Israeli airstrikes hit the outskirts of Damascus, early on March 31, marking the second such attack on the Syrian capital in less than 24 hours.

Citing a military source, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reported that Israeli warplanes launched “salvos of missiles” at a position near Damascus from the direction of the occupied Golan Heights just after midnight.

“Syrian air defenses intercepted the missiles and shot down a number of them,” the source said, adding that the aggression caused some “material damage.”

There were no immediate reports of injuries in the airstrikes. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-opposition monitoring group based in London, said the airstrikes targeted an arms depot for government forces and Iranian-backed groups just south of the capital.

The attack came less than 24 hours after a series of Israeli airstrikes that hit positions inside Damascus, wounding two soldiers and causing material damage.

The last attacks on Damascus were the fourth and fifth to be carried out by Israel against Syria in March. Aleppo International Airport, which is located in the country’s northern region, was hit twice on March 7 and 22. In addition, a series of airstrikes targeted an air defense base and a research center in the western governorates of Tartus and Hama on March 12.

Israel has been carrying out attacks against what it has described as Iran-linked targets in Syria for around a decade as a part of a covert military campaign. Tel Aviv hopes that the campaign, known as “the war between the wars” will eventually push Tehran and its allies, first and foremost Lebanon’s Hezbollah, out of the war-torn country.
