On March 22, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced that one of its drones had crashed in Syria during “routine activity.”
In a brief statement, the IDF said that there had been no breach of information and the incident was under investigation. The statement did not provide any details on the type of the drone, or in what part of Syria it had crashed.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense has not commented on the IDF’s statement, yet. However, news sources speculated that the Israeli drone crashed in the southern governorate of al-Qunitra.
The IDF operates tactical reconnaissance drones, like the Elbit Skylark, as well as commercial quadcopters, like the DJI Mavic, along the al-Golan Heights front on a regular basis. Several such drones crashed on the Syrian side of the front over the last few years.
The incident took place just hours after a series of Israeli strikes that hit Aleppo International Airport in northern Syria, placing it out of service. The target of the strikes was reportedly underground depots where Iranian-made missiles were stored.
Despite Israel’s repeated attacks on Syria, the situation on the al-Golan Heights front remains calm. Damascus and its allies do not appear to be planning to escalate against Tel Aviv, at least for the time being.
