The situation remains tense along all the front lines in Donbass.
After the head of the Wagner PMC addressed Ukrainian President Zelensky calling to allow the withdrawal of the unprofessional units who are now fighting in the city of Bakhmut, the Kiev regime is yet to make any official steps and declare the retreat of the Ukrainian military.
The city is almost surrounded. Only one road leading to Chasov Yar may be used for the transfer of Ukrainian forces; but it remains under heavy Russian artillery fire and any movement along this road is very risky.
In recent days, numerous videos shared by Ukrainian soldiers confirmed that a lot of Ukrainian groups began leaving the besieged city. Some of them attempt to escape via the fields to the south-west of the city. Meanwhile, the number of Ukrainian military columns, which were destroyed when attempting to withdraw along the last road remaining under Ukrainian control, has grown in recent days as well.
While the Kiev officials only admit “some deterioration of the situation in the area of Bakhmut and claim sending of additional forces there to repel Russians”, Ukrainian military sources as well as the Western media admitted that Russian Wagner fighters have already destroyed the most combat-ready units of the Ukrainian Army in Bakhmut.
Wagner sources shared the videos confirming that there are a lot of unprofessional soldiers left in the city, including young boys and elderly people, who do not survive long in the heavy battles for Bakhmut.
According to unconfirmed reports, the Ukrainian military began withdrawal of some of its most precious units, while their retreat is covered by untrained fighters from the territorial defense.
For example, on March 5, at least two Ukrainian groups that attempted to leave Bakhmut through the village of Krasnoe were destroyed by Wagner fighters. In total, up to 30 Ukrainian soldiers were reportedly killed and more than 60 wounded.
On the outskirts of Bakhmut, Ukrainian forces are still holding their positions in Krasnoe, Bogdanovka, and Hromovo. They are fiercely fighting in an attempt to allow the retreat of other units before the cauldron is closed.
At the same time, the Russian assault continues in the city. At least 20 Ukrainian strongholds were reportedly captured over the past weekend.
The advance of Russian forces continues in all directions in the besieged city. So far, about 40% of Bakhmut has reportedly came under Russian control.

I get shelling anything going in, but if they want their enemy to withdraw it seems counterproductive to shell convoys leaving, that only removes hope that they can get out. I understand not wanting heavy equipment leaving in these convoys though, so it makes sense to do the Israeli thing: Drop thousands of leaflets showing a corridor you’re willing to let people withdraw through and what equipment they should leave behind, then give orders to NOT shell conforming travellers.
But surely any UKR soldiers allowed to leave the city would re-arm and re-join the battles. So why would the Russian army let them go? That wouldn’t make sense, militarily.
If Wagner are to be believed (stress “if”) the number of actual soldiers fighting in the city is negligable but lets say they do reinforce other units of the Ukrainian military, the heavy equipment should still be lost to them and they’ll be telling their comrades about how they were spared before, when the time comes, they’ll probably encourage more people to withdraw.
The true believers, who Russia is seeking to destroy, will refuse and stay either to the end or until they’re forced out. It makes perfect military sense to reduce your enemy’s numbers and willingness to fight, the easiest way to do that is to be trustworthy and offer a safe way out (whether to your side or theirs.)

The roads are really muddy right now, so maneuverability is difficult. The Russians wanted to hit them while they were stuck in the mud. Some Ukrainians escaped, others got hit with artillery. The road out is a killing field.
It don’t make sense militarily but politically it’s very useful. Putin said he only want the Donbass (the heart of the russian speaking people in Ukraine), not the entire country. One of the goals of Russia intervention is to defend DPR and LPR againt Ukrainian army. Most of the Ukrainians aren’t nazis, they have been fooled by NATO and Ukr politicians. By letting them go Putin create a pool of Ukrainian living on the west of the Dniepr who want to end that war. They become political allies.

finally it’s a complicated equation. It is also time , which matters ; time , that Russia would lose if they consistently close the cauldron , fight to the end to kill or catch all Ukrainian soldiers , mercenaries , helpers , spies, nazis and other criminals. No doubt , it would double the own casualties , cost much effort , distract the whole Russian offensive and give the enemy the chance to prepare own actions to defeat Russians on other places.

By now it is a good compromise: a strategic hub in Donbass (almost) conquered, the second defence line of the Ukros crashed , many thousands of enemy forces eliminated, not only conscripts and older , but also Ukrainian battle hardened, NATO forces and equipment , mercenaries , nazis etc, with relative small own casualties,
further gained some positive image for the own people and morale ,
distracted the Ukros/west from other offensives on the front ,
gained time to better prepare own next steps ,
finally of course also lost time with this slow offensive around Bakhmut.
The next weeks and months will show if they calculated well.
Maybe… they don´t want the enemie to flee!?…
Certainly actions speak louder than words but it seems a little cynical, don’t you think? Complaining and asking your enemy to stop sending children and elderly to a battlefield and to let them out only to shell any who try to leave yourself.

Like them or not, the Wagner soldiers are a disciplined formation, including the convicts fighting for their country and hoping to survive 6 months of combat in very difficult situations.
