On February 25, a training aircraft of the Egyptian Air Force (EAF) crashed during an exercise in the central Egyptian governorate of Faiyum.
In a brief statement, Egyptian military spokesperson Colonel Gharib Abdel Hafez said that a “technical malfunction” was responsible for the crash.
“While implementing the training activities of the air force today, Saturday 25/2/2023, a technical malfunction occurred in a training aircraft causing it to crash, while the pilot survived without injuries,” the statement reads.
Al-Jazeera shared footage showing the wreckage of the EAF aircraft near the village of Ezbet Sheikh Jadallah in the southeastern countryside of Faiyum.
The Egyptian military didn’t identify the aircraft. However, the size of the wreckage suggests that it was one of the types the EAF uses for intermediate training, like the Chinese jet-powered Hongdu JL-8 and the Brazilian single-turboprop Embraer EMB 312 Tucano.
This was the EAF’s second aerial loss in less than three months. In November, an Egyptian fighter jet of an unknown type crashed during an exercise in an unspecified military training area. Back then, the crash was also blamed on a technical malfunction.
Egypt has been working to modernize its air force and improve the training of its pilots to cope with the increasing security challenges in the Middle East and North Africa since the removal of President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
