Canadian-made LAV 6 Armoured Combat Support Vehicles (ACSVs) have been finally spotted in the Russian special military operation zone in Ukraine.
On December 31, a video showing a ACSV moving near an unspecified front in Ukraine surfaced online. The vehicle was of the unarmed Troops/Cargo Vehicle (TCV) version.
The ACSV, which was developed by the Canadian branch of General Dynamics Land Systems, is powered by a Caterpillar C9 Turbo-charged six-cylinder Diesel with 450 hp. The vehicle has a maximum operational range of 600 kilometers and a top speed of 40 kilometers per hour off road and up to 100 kilometers per hour on road.
The armoured vehicle, which weights around 28 tons, can carry up to seven troops with their weapons and equipment in addition to its crew of three.
Last June 2022, the Canadian Government announced that it would be diverting 39 ACSVs to Ukraine as military aid from the order of 360 vehicles it had previously made for the Canadian military. The vehicles were reportedly delivered in September.
Canada has been one of the main military backers of Ukraine. The country supplied Kiev forces with large quantities of weapons after the start of the Russian special military operation, including a NASAMS medium-range air defense system, several M777 towed 155 mm howitzers with hundreds of M982 Excalibur guided shells and several dozen Wescam MX-15Ds optical targeting systems for use on Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 combat drones.
In addition to material aid, the Canadian military continues to provide combat training to thousands of Ukrainian service members.
Over the last few months, Ukraine received hundreds of Western-made armoured vehicles of different types from its backers. These vehicles made up for some of Kiev forces’ heavy material losses. However, they failed to shift the balance of power on the battlefield.

While these armoured vehicles will definitely be better in winter operations than the M113s, they have a design flaw that leads to easy rollovers during maneuvers on uneven ground and during high speed tactical combat maneuvers, which becomes an even greater risk when the unit is equiped with any kind of armed turret on top. While they might make a good field ambulance replacement, they will be very easy to spot and destroy on the field because they have way to high of a profile. The armour is light and can be defeated with RPGs or heavy caliber machine guns targetting just below the storage bin mounts on the sides. Basically, against Russian capabilities, they are basically going to be coffins with wheels and a crappy radio.
Saw a video on independent Western media yesterday about the US Bradley tank and how it’s failed basic road testing over the years from the 1980s it has serious issues when going through water or trying to cross areas of even 18 inches of water and had to be withdrawn from various tests the machine was unable to operate properly
Yup. The wider, lower profile of the Russian BMPs are much more stable and with the ‘pop up’ ATGM launcher it is tactically superior. ATGMs are very hard to detect for counter battery measures if the line of fire remains low to the ground. If the crew avoids using comms, and avoids firing any kind of gun, ECM towers and listening posts(the other two common methods for counter battery return fire)are useless to detect them as well. Once these platforms are integrated with drone targetting and automatic fire control robotics, BMPs with mortars will become a very effect trench assault force as well, likely even more effect than a tank, which is still the clutch weapon system when fighting in urban zones against fortified units inside buildings.
Anything green that makes noise leaves ruts and has a heat signature can be detected targeted and destroyed truck armor wheeled armor gun system whatever. Eyes in the sky with computerized target detection and engagement. Even people.
