On November 19, the so-called General Security Service of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib, announced that it had arrested a cell that carried out attacks on militants and Turkish forces.

“After several operations, an ISIS-affiliated cell that calls itself Ansar Allah was apprehended for targeting the Mujahedeen and the Turkish military in the al-Zawiya mount [in the southern Idlib countryside],” the security service said in a statement.

The service shared photos showing five alleged members of the captured cells, without sharing any details whatsoever about them.

Over the last few years, several attacks targeted militants of HTS and its allies as well as Turkish forces in Greater Idlib. However, none of these attacks were claimed by a group called Ansar Allah. No such group is known to be operating in Greater Idlib, or in any other region of Syria.

HTS maintains a tight grip over Greater Idlib thanks to its security service, which is reportedly involved in major human rights violations including extortion, kidnappings, torture and extrajudicial executions.

The terrorist group’s claims about the Ansar Allah cell may be nothing but a badly thought-out propaganda stunt meant to promote its security service as some anti-ISIS force.

The mainstream media, MSM, have been working to whitewash HTS and its terrorist leader, Abu Mohamad al-Julani, for a few years now. The terrorist group is being promoted as the guardian and savior of Greater Idlib, despite of its criminal behavior and radical ideology.
