On November 13, the Russian military grouping in Syria deployed reinforcements in the northeastern governorate of Deir Ezzor, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The London-based monitoring group said that the reinforcements were deployed in an operation center in the southern part of Deir Ezzor city, near a highway leading to the capital, Damascus, to “strengthen” Russia’s military presence in the governorate.
The reinforcements came all the way from Hmeimim Air Base in the costal governorate of Lattakia, the headquarters of the Russian military grouping in Syria.
The city of Deir Ezzor and all the areas of the governorate to the west of the Euphrates River plus a small pocket on the eastern bank are held by Syrian government forces with direct support from the Russian military and forces backed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The Russian military began working to strengthen its presence in Deir Ezzor in August following a limited confrontation there between Iranian-backed forces and the United States-led coalition, who maintains bases in the eastern and southeastern countryside of the governorate.
Later in August, the Russian military deployed air defense systems in the government-heled pocket on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River.
After the beginning of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine earlier this year, many Western news sources reported major withdrawal of Russian troops and equipment from Syria. However, the Russian military grouping in the country is still as active as before.
