Satellite Images Show Heavy Damage In Syria’s Aleppo Airport After Israeli Attack

The September 6 Israeli aerial attack on Syria inflicted heavy damage on Aleppo International Airport, satellite images released by Plant Labs on September 7 revealed.

The images show three large craters on the airport’s main runway. The attack on the airport was launched from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Aleppo International Airport was placed out of service as a result of the attack. All flights from and to the airport were redirected to Damascus International Airport near the Syrian capital. The Syrian Ministry of Transportation is yet to reveal when the airport could resume operations.

The Arab media said that the attack came as a response to the resumption of Iranian aerial weapons shipments to Hezbollah via Syria.

Exactly week earlier, a large-scale Israeli attack targeted the airports of Aleppo and Damascus. The attack caused heavy material losses at both airports. Civilian navigation equipment and air defense systems were destroyed. Five Syrian soldiers were also wounded.

While Aleppo airport was attacked by Israel twice this year, the more active Damascus airport was targeted at least four times.

The recent series of Israeli attacks on Syria’s main airports are apparently meant to pressure Damascus into closing its airspace for Iranian weapons shipments. This will not likely happen. Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said in a recent statement that Damascus will not back down, adding that Israel is playing with fire.
