On July 2, the Turkish Ministry of National Defense announced that two security officers were killed while taking part in Operation Claw-Lock in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.

In a brief statement, the ministry that the two officers lost their lives as a result of an attack by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Operation Claw-Lock, which was launched on April 17, is meant to neutralize PKK cells in the areas of Metina, Zap and Avashin Basyan.

A day earlier, a Turkish soldiers was pronounced died as a result of an “accident” in one of the areas where Operation Claw Lock is taking place.

The new casualty brought to 31 the number of Turkish service members killed in the Kurdistan Region since the beginning of Operation Claw-Lock.

These losses are a result of a fierce resistance by the PKK, whose cells continue to operate in the Kurdistan Region with much freedom. The Turkish Ministry of National Defense claims that its forces have so far killed, wounded or captured more than two hundred fighters of the PKK. Yet, the Kurdish guerilla group appears to be stepping up its attacks.

Turkey faced much criticism from all sides in Iraq after launching Operation Claw-Lock. Despite this, it appears to be determined to go on with the operation.
