On May 15, Syrian pro-government sources announced that a brigadier general of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) had died of wounded he sustained during a recent attack by militants based in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.

The senior officer, identified as Haidara Nawras Othman, was badly wounded while leaving a military post in the town of Milaja in the southern countryside of Idlib early on May 13. His vehicle was targeted with an anti-tank guided missile (ATGM).

Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib, claimed responsibility for the attack. The terrorist group also shared footage showing the moment the vehicle of Brig. Gen. Othman was hit.

On the same day as the ATGM strike, ten fighters of the Syrian National Defense Forces and a child were killed in two separate attacks in the western and northern countryside of Aleppo. Both attacks were also launched from Greater Idlib. The SAA and the Russian Aerospace Forces responded to these attacks with a series of strikes on Greater Idlib and Turkish-occupied areas in the northern Aleppo countryside.

The recent deadly attacks by HTS and its Turkish-backed allies represent a blatant violation of the ceasefire in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than two years ago.

The ceasefire in Greater Idlib is barely holding up. Only a serious response by the SAA and its allies could deter the militants occupying the region once again.
