The two American women who were rescued form the Yemeni Houthis (Ansar Allah) in a joint US-Saudi operation committed marriage fraud, the Sanaa-based Interior Ministry revealed on March 11.
In a statement, Brig. Gen. Abdul-Khaleq Al-Ajri, a spokesman for the pro-Houthi ministry, claimed that the Yemeni-born women, Zahraa Amin Abdel Karim Sufyan and her sister Samiha, had married Jihad Ali Ateeq Al-Bali and his brother Khatab on the promise of helping them to obtain American citizenships.
As a part of their alleged marriage for citizenship plot, the two Yemeni men paid Zahraa and her sister Samiha a total of $160,000.
According to the claims of Brig. Gen. al-Ajri, the two women fled to the Saudi-held southern Yemeni city of Aden just three weeks after their marrying Jihad and Khatab with help from two Yemeni men, Aziz and Ibrahim al-Radmi. The escape was reportedly coordinated by their mother, who lives in the US.
“The two men submitted an official report to a police station stating that their wives had escaped,” the spokesman said.
Brig. Gen. al-Ajri denied the Saudi claims that the two American women were detained, or that their movements were restricted by local authorities in any way.
A source with knowledge on the alleged rescue operation told Reuters that the Houthis forced the two American women, aged 19 and 20, to marry “under duress”. The source didn’t mention anything about the alleged marriage for citizenship plot.
The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis in Yemen claimed that the two women were rescued from the group in a special operation with the US. However, the Houthis’ claims suggest that the coalition’s only task was to evacuate the girls from Aden to the Saudi capital, Riyadh, where they were handed over to US officials.
