On February 20, two former commanders of the Syrian Free Army (FSA) survived an assassination attempt in the southern Syrian governorate of Daraa.
An improvised explosive device struck a vehicle that was carrying both commanders, Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Masalmah and Abu Jazwan Abu Nabout, as it was passing in the northern part of Daraa city, commonly known as Daraa al-Balad. The explosion damaged the vehicle. However, the two commanders survived with minor injuries.
Both al-Masalmah and Abu Nabout joined the 2018 Daraa reconciliation process. However, they didn’t enlist in any pro-government formations.
A day earlier, former FSA commander Jamal Sharaf was shot and killed by two unidentified gunmen in the town of Nawa in the western countryside of Daraa.
Sharaf, also known as Abu Zain, was the commander of the FSA’s Ahl al-‘Azm [the People of Determination] group. He also joined the 2018 Daraa reconciliation process.
Some Syrian opposition activists blamed the assassination of Sharaf and the attempt on the lives of al-Masalmah and Abu Nabout on the Syrian intelligence. Nevertheless, there is no evidence to back these accusations.
Syrian government service members in Daraa are also being targeted. On February 19, two soldiers were shot and killed in the northern countryside of the governorate.
