On December 28, the Houthis (Ansar Allah) released a video documenting some of their recent attacks on vehicles of Saudi-backed forces in the northern Yemeni province of al-Jawf.

The video shows the destruction of at least six pick-up trucks, at least one of which was armed with a heavy machine gun. The vehicles were targeted with improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the northern part of al-Jawf, near the border with Saudi Arabia’s Najran.

The Houthis’ engineer units are known for using advanced IEDs. Some of their explosive devices are equipped with an automatic detonator linked to a passive infrared (PIR) sensor, while others are equipped with remotely-controlled detonators.

According to the Saudi-led coalition, Lebanese Hezbollah and the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have been providing the Yemeni group with technical support to manufacture advanced IEDs.

The Houthis have been relying on IED attacks as a low-cost, low-risk tactic to inflict serious losses on the Saudi-led coalition and its proxies since the outbreak of the war in Yemen.
