On February 1, the Houthis (Ansar Allah) announced that they had targeted a field operations room of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) military and its proxies in the district of Usaylan in the Yemeni province of Shabwah with a ballistic missile.

Brig. Gen. Yahya Sari, a spokesman for the group, claimed that strike killed a number of Emirati service members along with scores of UAE-backed Yemeni fighters.

“This [field] room is the operations room that manages the battles in Shabwah,” the spokesman said in a brief statement.

Some Yemeni news sources claimed that the Houthis’ missile landed in an empty area in Usaylan without causing any losses. However, these claims were not backed by any evidence.

The Houthis targeted UAE-backed forces in Shabwah, namely the Giants Brigades, at least twice over the past week. On January 28 and 30, ballistic missiles launched by the group hit two gatherings of the Giants’ forces in Usaylan.

The Houthis escalate their strikes on January 31 by targeting the UAE itself with several suicide drones and ballistic missiles.

The recent strikes were a response by the Houthis to the ongoing ground operations by Saudi and UAE-backed forces in Shabwah and the neighboring province of Ma’rib. These operations have inflicted some serious human and material losses on Houthis forces, so far.
