On January 22, Iraqi authorities announced that they had eliminated two commanders and a fighter of ISIS near the administrative border between the northern provinces of Saladin and Kirkuk.
The commanders were identified as Abu Issam, head of ISIS operations in Tigris sector, and Abu Mahmoud, who was behind several deadly terrorist attacks.
The three terrorists were first located by the Federal Intelligence and Investigations Agency in the Ministry of the Interior. Later, the Iraqi Air Force targeted them while they were meeting south of the town of Hatar between Baiji in Saladin and Hawija in Kirkuk.

Maj. Gen. Yehia Rasool, a spokesman for Iraq’s Commander-in-Chief, said that the operation was a response to ISIS recent attacks. The spokesman was likely referring to the January 21 Diyala attack which claimed the lives of 11 Iraqi service members.
ISIS confirmed its responsibility for the deadly attack in a statement shared by the Amaq news agency. The terrorist group also released several Photos from the attack.
The Iraqi military, security forces and intelligence have been operating nonstop against ISIS cells in the country. Despite this, the terrorist group’s influence remains strong in the northern, western and eastern regions.
