On January 8, Iraqi authorities announced that they had taken custody of 50 suspected Iraqi members of ISIS from Syria.

“Iraq receives 50 suspected Iraqi members of ISIS gangs who were previously arrested in Syrian territory … They were handed over to the Federal Intelligence and Investigations Agency at the Ministry of Interior to take the necessary legal measures against them,” the Iraqi Security Media Cell said in a statement.

The Security Media Cell didn’t specify who exactly in Syria handed over the suspects. However, it said that the process took place in the Rabia border crossing which is controlled by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Iraqi authorities continue to coordinate against ISIS with their counterparts in Damascus though the Russia-Syria-Iran-Iraq Coalition that maintains a joint operations room in Baghdad’s highly-fortified Green Zone.

At the same time, Iraqi authorities coordinate with the SDF with the help of the US-led coalition. The two side work together on the issue of suspected Iraqi ISIS members and refugees in Syria’s northeastern region as well as on border security.

In the last few months, hundreds of Iraqi refugees who were taking shelter in camps in SDF-held northeastern Syria returned to Iraq. On January 5 only, 95 Iraqi families with 1,250 members returned to their country thanks to the ongoing cooperation between the authorities there and the SDF.
