The Saudi-led coalition’s attempts to deter the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen continue, despite the lack of any positive results.

Late on December 22, warplanes of the coalition carried out a series of airstrikes on the Houthi-held Yemeni capital, Sanaa. The coalition said that the airstrikes were a response to an attempt by the Houthis to attack Saudi Arabia with a suicide drone, which was intercepted over Yemen’s airspace.

“The operation in Sana’a was an immediate response after the destruction of a drone launched towards [the southern Saudi province of] Jizan,” the coalition said in a statement shared by the Saudi Press Agency.

The Saudi-led coalition claimed that the airstrikes destroyed seven drone depots of the Houthis located in the Central Security Camp in Sanaa.

Nevertheless, Yemeni sources said that the coalition’s airstrikes damaged al-Sab’aeen Bridge, al-Sab’aeen Maternity Hospital and a prison in the Central Security Camp where some 3,000 prisoners of war are being held.

The airstrikes failed to deter the Houthis, who were allegedly behind an attack with a suicide drone that targeted Abha International Airport in the southern Saudi province of ‘Asir early on December 23.

The Saudi-led coalition claimed that the drone was intercepted. However, material losses were reported near the airport.

The repeated airstrikes on Sanaa, which placed the capital’s airport out of service, have clearly failed to neutralize the Houthis’ offensive capabilities. Now, the Saudi-led coalition is promoting these aistrikes as a mean to deter the group. This will not likely work out.
