Late on September 16, a rocket attack targeted the Afghan capital, Kabul, which was captured by the Taliban more than a month ago.

According to several news sources, a number of rockets landed near a power plant in Khair Khana, a residential suburb located to the northwest of Kabul.

No causalities were reported as a result of the attack. However, at least some of the rockets damaged several civilian homes in Kabul’s PD-17.

If confirmed, this will be the second rocket attack to hit Kabul since the Taliban took over the city on August 15. The first attack targeted US forces in the capital’s airport on August 30. The attack was carried out by ISIS-Khorasan Province (ISIS-K).

While the nature of the new attack remains unclear, ISIS-K may have been behind it. The terrorist group’s presence in Kabul is well-established.

ISIS-K is one of the main challenges facing the Taliban, the new rulers of Afghanistan. The Taliban’s security forces have apprehended several alleged members of the terrorist group since seizing power. Nevertheless, it is yet to explain its strategy to counter the group.
