On July 27, an explosion rocked a chemical plant in Leverkusen, Germany. Two people have died and at least 31 have been injured, according to preliminary data.

The explosion occurred at a tank farm that is part of the facility. The fire was put out, but 5 employees are still missing, and a search is underway.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident and the death of an employee,” Chempark site operator Currenta said in a statement.

The city of Leverkusen is located 20 kilometers  north of Cologne. Bayer, one of Germany’s largest chemical manufacturers, is headquartered there.

The threat to the German Leverkusen after the explosion at the plant remained, the composition of emissions was being clarified, a representative of the Chempark company claimed at a briefing.


Chempark is a chemical park in Europe that hosts more than 70 companies specializing in production and research. The plants in Leverkusen produce an important part of the total chemical production in North Rhine-Westphalia.
