On December 29, the lead ship of Gremyashchiy-class corvettes entered service with the Russian Navy. The ceremony of raising the Russian Navy’s St. Andrew’s flag was held at the Severnaya Shipyard in St. Petersburg.

The Pacific Fleet of the Russian Navy is expected to receive six more corvettes of this class. They will be eventually armed with Zircon hypersonic missiles, according to the Russian military.

Nice fire-power…Russians suffered from this project which was started at 2011 and German Mtu engines but finally ready,congrats..

HiaNd

actually it was only “engine” problem (brought by EU sanctions) that has slowed down project and have forced Russia to produce their own engine instead of German.
just like it has happened with “Krivak” class frigates and gas turbines from Ukraine (replaced with Russian) or chopper engines etc..
they never stop helping Russia to get rid of their crap and become totally self sufficient .

10 years ago there was many contracts with european countrys, however Putin knew the extent, thus slowly but surely did as they ought, not only self reliant but moreson more important better powerplants than the europeans without gorbachev red tape.
This is why I always err on liberal democracy, truth is todays seems even worse than say cccp of the 80s? Come to think of it,Putin now the smarter democracy of todays.

Harry Smith

Yeah. Sanctions are good! We had 16Д49 developed, but MTU were ordered.

Jesus

Yes, sanctions are good to wean from western products.

Looks the buisness not most huge though I wonder what other bits and pieces is hidden!

BMWA1

Lots there for 2.5 K tonnes !

Small is good in naval warfare, harder to spot, cheaper to run. Frankly if a handful of Zircons can take out destroyer or two on their own, then it’s very cost effective to just use smaller ships.

Harry Smith

Please don’t look at size, but look at weapons. I.E. Russian cruiser Varyag has enough weapons which with probability of 95% can destroy the whole US CSG.

SnowCatzor

That’s more of a Frigate than a Corvette, better armed than most Frigates too. Looks very capable, but not expensive overkill like the modern Destroyer has (arguably) become.

You could build 3 or 4 of these, or similarly well armed frigates, for the cost of one Arleigh Burke Destroyer.

Tommy Jensen

We have also Corvettes.
