On May 15, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) carried out a series of airstrikes on ISIS’s areas of influence in Syria’s central region, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

The London-based monitoring group said that more than 16 airstrikes targeted hideouts of ISIS cells near the town of al-Sukhnah in the eastern Homs countryside and in the outskirts of the town of al-Resafa in the southern countryside of Raqqa.

According to the SOHR, more than 236 Russian airstrikes have hit personnel, equipment and hideouts of ISIS in central Syria since the beginning of May.

The VKS’s intense operations have forced ISIS cells in central Syria to lay low, at least for the time being. The most recent incident in the region was on May 12, when a soldier of Syrian government forces was killed and two others were wounded near the al-Bilas mount in the eastern Hama countryside after stumbling upon a landmine that was planted by ISIS terrorists a while ago.

The decline in ISIS operations in central Syria does not mean that the threat posed by the group is over. Very recently, the group’s terrorists were spotted in an area located less than 20 kilometers to the northwest of the ancient city of Palmyra in the eastern countryside of Homs.

ISIS insurgency in central Syria will not likely end any time soon. However, Syrian government forces and the VKS are for sure making some progress in the region.
